Why Cauliflower is Good for Pregnant Women

Good nutrition is important for anyone, let alone a pregnant woman.  In order for the mother to support the nutritional needs of her baby such as calcium, folate and other vitamins, it’s important she eats the right kinds of foods.  Like cauliflower.

Cauliflower should be a part of a pregnant woman’s diet primarily because it is rich in folate, a B vitamin needed for cell growth and replication.  Sufficient folate in the body will help the baby in the womb develop properly and fully.

Aside from folate, pregnant women also need lots of vitamin C.  In fact, they should get around 70 mg of ascorbic acid in their bodies a day.  Eating just one cup of cauliflower florets can actually provide 100 percent of the Recommended Daily Allowance of Vitamin C.

Cauliflower is also a good source of calcium.  Even when one a woman is not pregnant, she still needs calcium to make her bones and teeth strong, more so, she is pregnant.  Cauliflower along with kale, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables are rich sources of calcium.

Other nutrients found in cauliflowers are phosphorous, magnesium, zinc, manganese, selenium, and sodium among others.  All these nutrients will help you and your baby keep healthy and would also protect the baby at a young age or later in life from contracting illnesses like leukemia, lymphoma and lung cancer.

They say cauliflower is a “gassy food.”  Will eating it affect the baby in your womb?

The answer is, no.  You may have been warned from eating foods that cause gas like cabbage, beans and cauliflowers, but eating these vegetables cannot possibly harm or affect your baby any more than other foods can.
